Camel spider (a.k.a. yellow girl), without the camel or girl.
Zeki Aksakal, who lives in Tortum district of Erzurum province,
was bitten a month ago by a 'camel spider', known among
the populace as 'yellow girl', while he was gathering grass in
his garden. At the time Aksakal regarded the bite as nothing
much but in the evening the pains began to increase.
The following day, Aksakal went to the local health unit and
was transported to the dermatology clinic at Erzurum Ataturk
University Medical Faculty Yakutiye Research Hospital
because of the swelling in his leg. After staying in the hospital
for 20 days a deep wound formed in his leg.
"Ouch!"
The skin on Aksakal's leg began to putrefy. He related that
"they gave me medicine for days and bandaged the wound
but each day it got bigger and deeper. That little spider has
reduced me to this." Dr. Enver Aydin explained that the
poison the spider secreted putrefied the skin and flesh in
Aksakal's leg, adding that "we'll transplant skin tissue from
his leg and try to close the wound with that."
The 'camel spider' generally lives in hot and dry areas and
is found mostly in northern Iraq, Mardin and Sanliurfa. The
spider can reach lengths of 30 centimeters (about 12 inches).
Tortum district is north of Erzurum city.
